Exploring 20 square miles of African savannah and jungle is never an easy task. But when you’re up against an army of highly trained mercenaries, the danger becomes unimaginable. Welcome to the world of Far Cry 2.
Far Cry 2 has some of the best explosions in the business
Vehicles are great for cover as well as transport
It’s best to keep some of the game’s factions on your side
The environmental graphics are both stunning and highly varied

It’s been over four years since the release of the first Far Cry, and Far Cry 2 has almost nothing in common with it beyond being a first-person shooter with excellent graphics and advanced artificial intelligence. It’s by a different developer, and you now play one of eight different mercenary characters out to catch an arms dealer nicknamed “The Jackal.”

The sci-fi enemies have also been jettisoned in favour of a much more realistic game where survival skills are just as important as a good aim. The rules of engagement--either by stealth or all guns blazing--are entirely up to you.

Key Features
  • Virtual safari: The game features 20 square miles of terrain for you to travel, filled with realistic fauna and flora and fully destructible trees and buildings.
  • Fiery realism: With an all-new graphics engine created just for the game, fire moves and propagates exactly as in real-life, with vegetation breaking and snapping realistically.
  • The coming storm: A dynamic weather system changes to reflect your mood, with the sky turning dark and stormy during bad times.
  • Jungle survival: Highly realistic weapons degrade with use, bullets need to be dug out of your body, and vehicles break down if pushed beyond their limits.
  • Buying friends: Meet and co-operate with fellow mercenaries as you pit different factions against one another in a war-torn African state.
About the Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Ubisoft’s huge development studio in Canada has created many of the French publisher’s biggest hits, including the Splinter Cell,/i> series, the modern Prince of Persia games, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and the Far Cry sequels and spin-offs.

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't be called Far Cry   July 19, 2010

Far Cry was a fantastic game. THIS isn't. The setting is unpleasant, the characters are unpleasant, the missions are depressing. Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to make this game set in war-torn Africa. It doesn't deserve to be called Far Cry 2, that's for sure, wish I hadn't bought it.

So here we are...finally a half decent fps. It all began with Far Cry - a good game but with a anti-climatic end. Then on the same engine we get Crysis - again a pretty decent stab at fps but a powerful pc needed to enjoy the game fully.....now we have Far Cry 2 and WOW! No stupid mutant monkeys or aliens with freeze rays and a topical real world (believable) storyline. Ubisoft have pulled out the stops on this baby.

But there are imperfections and a few bugs such as bad guys inside rocky landscapes...they can shoot at you, but you don't have a hope when shooting back at them even with an RPG.

Another problem (correct me if i'm wrong) diamonds you cannot reach (required to collect ALL of them to complete the game fully by the way), hang gliders that don't fly very far (the ones in the original Far Cry were better) and finally why are all the rifles in the game left handed versions?? The AK47 - real weapon the cocking handle and ejection port are on the right hand side...same for the AR16, the FAL and all the rest (ok the G3 has its cocking handle on the left but the ejection port is still on the right)...this is a fundamental flaw that makes the game less realistic. I accept it's eye candy for the player when your character reloads and gets ready to rock again but for anyone with even a small knowledge of the firearms portrayed in the game it spoils it.

Disc protection software - no problems, and all the fuss about only being able to install it 5 times....if the instructions are followed uninstallation and reinstall is not a problem....it's good that software companies are making it difficult for software pirates imo.

Well done Ubisoft!

This is a terrible game.

Having read several of the glowing reviews on various gaming websites (such as Gamespot) I thought it looked and sounded great.

Its actually extremely repetitive, tedious and frustrating to play. Every mission is the same- the 'open' environment actually gives you very little room to maneuver and the same guys constantly spawn and come mindlessly after you on the roads. The combat is broken- several rounds from a heavy machine gun into the chest of a rebel grunt is necessary to take him down, and the stealth factor is non-existent.

This game is no fun at all. I think the gaming websites might be getting backhanders for recommending terrible games like this, or maybe they don't bother playing them for more than an hour or so.

The game has good graphics, the weapons fire terribly and you spend half the time looking for pills to cure malaria lol. Very boring gameplay where you drive from place to place rescue a hostage in 5 minutes and then drive for 10 minutes back to camp, with malaria - then you faint halfway through the drive etc etc etc booooring.

I will not write a masterpiece-of-a-rewiev, I will only say that if you want to use it as a benchmark, go ahead buy it but not for more than 3 quid. If you think this is a game you want to spend more than 3 quid on you are wrong. Boredom, stupid AI, repetitive situations, more boredom. Very good graphics though. If you are looking for a good game, don't waste your money on this one, buy your mum flowers.
