4 out of 5 stars overall good game but highly annoying   August 28, 2010
Jason Prudhoe (United Kingdom)
overview:
i have played the game and i dont have a problem with the strategy or the concept, the winning or loosing but i have a problem with the game engine which annoys me greatly.

the good:
the game is good graphics but by todays standards some areas are a little outdated but considering we are talking about an army of men with swords shields or spears and so on, i mean even my 4870hd ATI 1gb card cant keep up with anything more then about 9000 soldiers at most.

but it's a kill fest and the factions are all balanced, you start off the imperial campaign with one of 3 roman factions and the more enemy factions you defeat the greater the chance you get to unlock these factions and play them in the the campaign from their point. the strategy aspect is great and ive had a lot of wins about 300 and half of them were playing the Greeks and that was a lot of fun being outmatched and outnumbered against the Romans of brutii and scopii while fighting off the attention of the Macedonians back on the main land of a divided Greece. i also lost a good number of matches but i made the enemy pay a heavy price under the conditions.

the bad:
the game engine design is really annoying which would of otherwise been a 5 star fun rating. the withdraw function is a bit strange, you loose your general on the field and enemies which you know you can defeat instead make your own troops run from battle after you loose a few troops but in other battles where you loose your general, the engine doesnt withdraw the units and you can fight on.

another flaw are there are no formations menu other then the ones designed into the engine and it would of done wonders to make it more interesting on the field, there are times when i wanted my general heavy horse units to leave this rectangle formation and stand in a square formation or a circle formation but the only formation open is a triangle formation.

the ai is programmed to give you no chance but to fight back and you are non stop constantly hounded but soon enough you will want to have a respite just for a few turns as a change of pace and a rethink in strategy. the ai siege a town but when the ai is actually on the battlefield around the town against my units, they dont do anything unless they have catapults or rams, the game designers should of written some coding so they can attack some towns and capture gates with a spies help.

another bad point are the sea battles or there a lack of. it would of been great to just jump into a sea battle like a land battle and control your fleet instead of automatically resolving it, most of the time i dont see the reason to even have a battle screen up when you can only have one of two buttons that functions unless you attack another fleet from the main map screen which enables the second button which is retreat in the battle window.. if i wanted to retreat i wouldn't of sent my fleet to their fleet in the first place.

my opinion:
the game critics out there say it's one of a few perfect games, but it has one too many problems for it to be a perfect game thats for sure, my score: 6/10.

4 out of 5 stars Still entertaining   August 14, 2010
Dragos
Nothing much to say or add to the many reviews the game has received since it first came on the market. I was pleasently surprised at the bargain price. The best thing about the game (beside getting three games for the price of one) is that, some good years after the original release, it's still entertaining. Works fine with W7 X64.

4 out of 5 stars Rome Total War   July 24, 2010
Pensive
The graphics are detailed and realistic, the game is very easy to understand and offers a wide variety of options so that each game remains interesting. Thus, even if you are an accomplished player each game offers a unique experience.

4 out of 5 stars Cool   June 27, 2010

I played this at my freinds and it is the best game ever. It brings the fun to life and even adults can play this. Buy, buy, buy no matter how hight the price!

4 out of 5 stars Addictive campaigns, natioanlities vary greatly   March 23, 2010
K. Ng (uk)
Nationalities now have far greater variety of troop types and recruitment routes and limits at different cities. So you'll learn not to use similar imperial strategy when campaigning with different nations.

I wish there is a manual or a pdf version to warn me of this.

Also unlike in other periods of Total War, in battle mode it's impossible to micro-manage the deployment to create your own battle formation within a group. It's best to stick with what the computer's prepared for you, and don't try to be too clever. Bravey and timing, not brains and prudence, are what's called for. This makes it relatively like ancient period wargaming.

No crashes, nor programming flaws, nor AI problems experienced. This tried and tested game is a must for any interested gamers reading this.
