Dull and unrewarding July 12, 2010 M. J. White 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is what strategy gamers call a Real Time Strategy game (RTS). The problem I had with this RTS game is that the "real time" element offered no pause for thought, no consideration could be made about building a great empire as you are constantly under attack and need to keep repetitively clicking on the same combat units each turn. I found this to be very dull and unrewarding.
To my mind the balance of this game is all wrong, it is more like an arcade game than a serious strategy title. Indeed, having played AOE 2 on the PS2, this seemed like a far more fitting format for this type of shoot em up. AOE 2 on PS2 was actually quite good and my reasons for buying AOE on PC was that I thought the balance of the game would be altered for PC much as the excellent Sid Miers Civilisation title has an arcade oriented style that works well on the PS3 but a more in depth set up for PC.
I'm sure there are plenty of gamers who will like the shoot em up style of this game but if you prefer a more considered strategy title, as I do, then avoid this completely.
Good but not great May 17, 2010 nmhancock (England) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am a massive AOE fan and was so excited when I heard this was coming out and I must say the graphics are so much better which makes it much more fun to play. However, I'm afaid to say that once I completed the okay campaign with an uninteresting storyline I was not compulsed to continue playing. I think that overall it is a good game, as all AOE games are, but I much prefer Age of Mythology: The Titans which I have been playing for years and I have completed the campaign several times and I'm always playing multiplayer games with my dad and brother.

Fun game. Best bit making your own empire, love the home city window. Still prefer Age of Mythology though.
