Tedious August 11, 2010 Roger 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game has to be the most tedious and fiddly RPG I've ever played.
A lot of missions involve talking endlessly to people. On and on it goes - talk to this guy, now go across the map (no fast-travel for you!) and talk to that guy, then off to some other place to talk to another guy, etc. Combat is absurd - the combat system is variously described as 'original' and 'novel' but 'like an irritating game of whack-a-mole' would be more accurate.
There's little free roaming either, you're mostly confined to one map at a time.
Voice acting ranges from average to ridiculous and the wanton swearing and porny-pics of women your dislikable character 'seduces' are laughably absurd, and the skill system insane to navigate. There is a thick manual included in this game but it's not terribly helpful - installation instructions are placed on chapter 4, behind descriptions of the notable swamps and inns of the gameworld!
The graphics are pretty good and I did like the grim world in which it was set, but the game itself was irritating and boring. I tried to like it (due to the amount I spent on it) but after multiple attempts and a dozen wasted hours I gave up. Hopefully any possible sequel will be put together properly.
The Witcher, bugfixed July 10, 2010 R. Court 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Enhanced Edition fixes most of the bugs in the first version.
There are also seven extra "Adventures", but five of those have no voice acting, and one of the two that does is apparently a race against the clock, which is something I really, really dislike. So there is not a lot more to it than the bugfixes for me.
So, if you've not played The Witcher, this is the version to get. If you have played The Witcher, unless you are prepared to play in an almost silent world (the SFX are there, there's just no talking), the value is a lot more questionable.
The Witcher definitely goes out of it's way to be an 18 rated game, if strong language offends you, give it a miss.
In terms of my ratings, having already played The Witcher through, this is probably about a 70%, it's a bit more than a 60%, but it's certainly not an 80% for me.
The Witcher is really good, roll on The Witcher 2! July 7, 2010 Daz 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'd never heard of the producers before. However if you can get over the few small bugs and anomalies, then this game is awesome fun!
- The plot is immersive, fun and interesting.
- The graphics are lovely.
- The soundtrack is awesome!
- The controls and game play are simple enough.
The only thing that lets it down is the slight unresponsiveness of the combat combo styles and the voice acting is terrible.
Otherwise it's brill, definitely worth a go if you're an RPG fan!
hoooowe! June 21, 2010 Mr. S. Belshaw (United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is definatly a fantastic game and not your average fairy tale or medieval game you would think. This is probably the closest thing you can get to real if monsters and dwarves existed. Its an 18 for a reason dont buy it for your kids or yourself if you cant take a shock or two...infact only buy it if your prepared to have a laugh at some of the stuff this game produces. Brilliant Dialogue, ace combat system, easy to understand, never nothing to do due to a tight-knit community making mods for the game and adding side adventures for hours more fun, get drunk, play dice poker, get laid and get cards with smokin hot medieval chicks on them after you tap them.
I really like the protagonist Geralt, he has a serious attitude and adeep voice without seeming emotionless, dull or boring. Hes kind of to the point but still shows alot of passion. Hes a fearless Witcher who suffers from memory loss but has the brains to retrace his life...a true warrior.
5/5 stars i found nothing wrong with this game...although be aware that a serial code doesnt come with this version, a slipup on Atari's end. you have to email there helpline with pictures as proof of purchase to recieve a registration key. You can still play the game fully dont worry...but you wont get any future updates or anything like that i think until you register i think.
CLASSIC MASTERPEICE, a must buy.
Not the stable game you think it will be, 1.6 patch is needed asap June 17, 2010 ymo1965 (Peterborough, Uk) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This game was originally released back in 2007, so you would think the so-called 'platinum edition' should be pretty much clean of bugs and polished to a nice shine. Alas not.. i have had to stop playing this bug-ridden-mess due to an extreme bug, preventing me from completing a quest. The game was uninstalled out of frustration or it would of found itself flying out through my window. Yes, the game is hi-def and is sure to please most would-be heroes, but underneath it's candy coated exterior, lies a game still containing more bugs than an average bed. The 'witcher 2' is currently in development, but after this mess i won't be venturing any further with this franchise. I am using the latest 1.5 patch contained in this release, but does little to help the game with stability. Why didn't they implement the crash report that ATi used whenever a problem surfaced. As soon as a crash happens, up pops a requester to send back a report to the devs. That would of been a better way to iron out this game. The 'Beast' in the first chapter disappeared by itself while i was fighting another monster, a fist fighter in the local pub also disappears in mid-fight leaving me stuck in the 'fighting mode' that only a reload could fix, and many other 'desktop' crashes.
The game also features some moments of surprise 'shock' language/dialogue. I'm not shocked easily, but i felt phrases like 'Your mother sucks dwarf c*ck' , 'my balls itch' and 'abso-f*cking-lutely' was totally unnecessary and doesn't suit the genre.
All i can say is, thank god it didn't cost anymore than it did, or i would of been really jarred off.
