Amazon.co.uk Review Warcraft in space, but instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the RTS genre's typical race for resources, but that's the only shared trait. Terrans can move their bulky mechanised bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic powers. Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story unfolds around you, you'll experience the Zerg's hive mentality and decipher the mysterious Protoss by the game's dramatic conclusion. Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with dialogue, chapter screens and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer games are also very well represented by Blizzard's own free Battle.net service. If you'd rather play over a local area network, StarCraft will generously "spawn" up to seven copies so your friends can join in. In keeping with StarCraft's groundbreaking design, Brood War presents you with three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming humans, insidious Zerg and proud Protoss collide again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race's arsenal makes for tense battles. Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more than 100 additional multiplayer maps. Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile frigates as well as medics who automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under)ground support. Along with the Corsair fighter, the Protoss re-enter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from weak artificial intelligence in path finding. Real-time strategy games don't get any more epic or any more satisfying. --Jack Gardiner

Shooting fish in a barrel March 22, 2010 Jason Prudhoe (United Kingdom) Humans, Zerg, Protoss and a storyline for each race, you get to play commander for these respective races and the campaign central to this. much like command and conquer before it, the game focuses around a war for freedom, at least for the humans that is...
Prologue;
before the various wars, earth had more people then it can deal with, an idea was formed by the UED - United Earth Directorate, the directorate was an oppressive tyrannic dictatorship ran by the military. the idea they had was simple, get all the prisoners on transports and have then colonize other planets, along the way the ships failed due to mechanical failures after years of neglect, the ships either crashed or landed on various planets within the Koprulu Sector, oddly the protoss took an interest and watched from a distance as the humans called themselves terran, formed a confederation and ended up bombing each other and killing each other for various reasons while splitting into factions like the sons of korhal, the kel-morian combine and the umajan protectorate, one included a planet named Korhal which suffered by these tyrants. in the years that followed, the zerg flew in to add them to the evolutionary chain because the undiscovered psionic ability the terrans had. as soon as the problem was noticed, the terrans took first blood but ended in disaster when the planet was bombarded by the protoss who are now more then observers as the demo and intro states as soon as you load up, the story picks up just after Chau Sara was rendered uninhabitable.
several notable characters appear and secondary characters, they also have a say in things to come. a very enjoyable game to play even against the computer.
in the years since starcraft 2 that is about to come out, multi-player became absolutely massive. i personally like 'use map settings' and joining this games, far more fun then 'deathmatch', 'ffa' or 'ladder matches', dodge the larva, tower defense, sunken defense, tank defenders, 20 tricks. all good.
Starcraft: Broodwar expansion pack January 2, 2010 Lukasz Piwko What else to say besides that it is THE game that every one should at least try once before they say anything about computer gaming
A mythical game! September 8, 2009 B. Marie (Réunion) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'd never played Starcraft previously even if I'd heard talked a lot.I don't regret my purchase.It's the best game of strategy! You can make campaigns or play in online multiplayer mode and I don't grow tired of it.Furthermore,this version with extension "Broodwar" adds new maps and compaigns.It's a friend who advised me to buy it and I made well listen to him.This game has more than ten years old and there's a reference even today, that's very significant! To try or re-try absolutely!
Better than I expected August 30, 2009 Ricardo Bernardino (Lisbon, Portugal) I was not not very excited because it is a game from the distant year of 1998 but when I started playing it I loved it.
StarCraft July 24, 2009 E. Forsyth (Space) Well I'm not going to lie to you, the graphics are dated, the AI is basic and Hell the dubbing for the characters is shocking. However this in hand, the game is brilliant, Story line fantastic, and so fun to play. Worth getting with starcraft 2 on the way.
