Amazon.co.uk Review
Every so often, a game comes along that completely redefines a particular genre. In 1998, Half-Life ignited first-person shooters with its addictive blend of storytelling and action sequences. Homeworld, a polished, groundbreaking first-time effort from Relic Entertainment, attempts to change the way gamers play real-time strategy games. In the past, none of these 3-D games have accomplished the daunting task with the same gorgeous visuals and tactical gameplay as Homeworld.

Upon the discovery of an ancient galactic map inscribed with the words "our home," the people of Kharak began construction of a massive mother ship and fleet to traverse the galaxy and reach their long-rumoured home world. Players construct, maintain, and control the Kharak fleet through 16 challenging single-player missions or against fellow humans on Sierra's WON.net online gaming service. During the solo campaign, you'll face literally 100s of enemy vessels. All friendly and enemy ships, ranging from small, yet dangerously quick interceptors to the powerful, though expensive destroyers and heavy cruisers, are rendered with exquisite detail; further, expect plenty of impressive visual effects, from the glowing ship exhaust to fiery explosions. Adding to the pluses, Homeworld's thoughtful interface design eases the intense--and often complicated-resource-gathering and combat situations. --Doug Radcliffe

4 out of 5 stars Looking good.   September 5, 2010

Homeworld plays well and is a good looking game for its vintage. I've only completed the first couple of levels; they're well designed and highly playable. Getting used to the 3D location method for deploying space ships, took a while but it works. Considering its age this is an enjoyable game, I will continue to try getting hold of Homeworld 2, so that must say something.

5 out of 5 stars Classic   August 4, 2010

I ordered this and received it with 3 days from Zoverstocks (a great place to get used games cheap) so nothing wrong on the shipping front.

The game unfortunately had not been checked, and I had not been given an instruction manual which had printed on it the Activation key required for installation, that was a mistake on Zoverstocks side but I'm reviewing the game itself here as delivery and packaging varies, and the situation was quickly remedied anyway by going online and searching for a CD key.

I had looked at this game before because of it's excellent reviews and its minuscule graphics requirements (as it was from 1999). It ran quickly on my laptop with a mere 64mb of graphics RAM, needing only 4mb. Even though the game required such little RAM, it's graphics were pretty and detailed for what was available at the time, I was not dissatisfied at all, being able to zoom up to the ships and examine every detail.

I should now probably explain the aim of the game. You are a commander of a fleet in space, seeking stones that will lead you to the Homeworld, the original world where your race came from. You must command your mothership and fleet to scour the galaxy and complete tasks, encountering enemies on the way. The story line is simple but still is solid enough to structure the game properly.

The controls are simple and very well explained in the Tutorial at the beginning, which teaches you the basic skills, such as controlling the camera, all the way up to difficult to perform tasks, whilst still being clear.

Overall, this game is amazing value for money and can be run on almost any machine, and to any keen player of strategy games, I would highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Seminal moment in entertainment   July 1, 2010

Homeworld was a little more than a game in hindsight.

I bought it when it came out first time round as the prospect of full sphere gaming was a revolution & big space fights were cool, but all this is secondary.

Never has a game impacted me more than this. 11 years later I still remember poignant moments from starting out on the edge of explored space and how that actually felt, to later incidents when the exceptional soundtrack would hum back in and lock your mind in a different place. Very cinematic.

Then there was the end...

I can't say too much obviously as I don't want to ruin this game for anyone brave enough to have a go of an 11 year old game. But if you do be under no illusion, Time has not diminished this achievement, and an achievement it is.

Relic and anyone else involved in this should still be proud of what they did. I would say however that it is a shame it has not found its way onto next gen equipment.

If ever a game was to be amongst the first for photo realistic graphics then this should have been.

If you have ever been mesmerized by the old sci fi art of the 60' 70' & 80' periods then this will give you pleasure.

I hope you read this and buy it. Its worth ten times its price even today, I am listening to the soundtrack on you tube as I type.

Thank you Relic.

5 out of 5 stars Homeworld simply awsome!   May 31, 2010

Out of all the failed retrys of the games you'll find lots and lots of stratagy space games all made after this game (1999) but they just keep failing because this is THE best and orginal game in it's whole section of space stratagy games. If you are thinking "nah this games too old" hell no, might be 11 years old but it still gets my blood pumping.
