Amazon.co.uk Review With the glory days of the real-time strategy game now nothing but a distant memory, Activision's Total War series has come to totally dominate the strategy market and Rome is such a huge leap above the already impressive Medieval and Shogun titles that the series has almost become a mini-industry in itself. Set, fairly obviously, during the hey day of the first Roman Empire, the game gives you total control over your own faction with the game once again split between a turn-based strategic world map and real-time tactical battles. The former allows you to build and maintain armies and buildings, but also gives increased control over diplomacy and trade--elements that were largely overlooked in previous titles. The real draw of the game though is the tactical battles which are now displayed using some quite staggering 3D graphics that can see up to 10,000 separate warrior in battle at one time. With units ranging from elephants and inflammable pigs to centurions and escaped slaves just watching the battles unfold is as epic as any Hollywood blockbuster. What's perhaps most impressive about the game is that controlling such huge numbers of soldiers is actually surprisingly easy with a simple point-and-click interface making everything as smooth as possible. Rome: Total War is one of those rare breed of games that is largely impossible to fault. In technical and gameplay terms it gets everything right and unless you have a pathological hatred of strategy games this is easily one of the best PC games ever made. --David Jenkins

A Must May 20, 2010 Rhodes J. R. Spicer (UK) I bought this game for my brother, who says that is a fantastic epic stratagy game
Rome Total War April 10, 2010 Mr. Chris Sharpe I bought Rome Total War a long time ago and i would class myself as a total war expert playing every realese except for shogun.
Rome Total war is a very fun and exiitng strategy based game from the creative assembly it features playable factions:
Scipi
Bruti
Juli-the three roman factions
to unlock other factions you must complete either the long or short campaign which you must destroy a certain faction and capture a certain amount of reigons (the main point of the game).
you unlock factions like:
Gauls
Britons
Germannia
Carthage
Greek Cities
just a few as examples
the games is very fun and will take up a good week of gaming time for each campaign with lots of in game things to do and look after:
the Senate (if you are a roman faction) will give you certain missions which you must complete in a certain amount of turns and if completed you will gain rewards and if failed your reputuation will drop significantly.
you must also watch out for the happiness of your population which can be agusted by tax levels and the construction of certain buildings.
if the happiness of you populaiton dorps to much they will start to riot and if things get to bad they will completly revolt and you will lose control of that settlement.
to improve your armies buildings and genrally your empire you need to upgrade your towns and cities which to upgrade you need a certain population amount and when your city or town is upgraded (which will take a few turns vrying on the size of the upgrade) you will be able to upgrade other buildings in the town which will create hapiness better troops and ships and make your life easier.
combat in the game is very fun even thoguh some of the units graphics and be dodgy at worst but generally the landscape and units are very good. when you attack or are attacked you will get three choices either to retreat if you have enough movement points left or automativally resolve conflict (which means the game will decided who wins) or fight battle on battle map in which you ocntrol your units give them orders for who to attack what stances posiitons and where to move to you feel like you really are there controlling your forces on the battle map.
when going to attack a city if it has protective walls palsides etc you will need siege equitment depending on the type of wall will dpend on the type of siege equitment you can create and the more men you have the more siege equitment you can have but creating siege equitment takes turns so someitmes the enemy can call in reinforcements from surrondings areas to attack you. if you win the siege you will get control of the city or town and there by getting control of the region.
there is a multiplayer aspect to the game in which you can fight other people in battles but there is no multiplayer campaign
i personally have experienced no problems with the game as it has run smoothly for all the years i have had it.
i would recommend this to any person looking for a fun realistic strategy game which makes you think and at the price you can get it at now days it is a very worth while buy.
Rome TOTAL REALISM - a new lease of life March 8, 2010 Grev (Brighton) Anyone who owns or is buying this game should immediately download the patches for Rome Total Realism, a free mod which completely rejigs this game for the better. While it doesn't improve the graphics it makes the units and factions much more historically accurate (no more made up Roman SAS style units!), utterly rejuvenating this now old game. I never thought I'd play Rome again after Medieval II came out years ago, but I'm having great fun replaying it all over again in a much better version. Download that mod!
Be the best conqueror! February 18, 2010 Wojciech Mikosz (London,UK) Great done continuation of Medieval-better graphics, sounds and climate of play.
I love Roman history so I felt the game was made especially for me!Haha!
Everything is great in that game, but be sure you get some patches from the NET-the game is so much better when you can fix some small problems.
Another must have!
Rome Total War Review December 9, 2009 Oliver307 This game is really good fun. The graphics were surprisingly good for a RTS (real time stratagy) and the realism of the game was also supreme. It has real historical battles and a custom battle setting to create your own battles. The campaign is a good addition and when you first beat the game you unlock more civilisations to play as on the campaign. One thing I say is that on custom battle the ammount of units you can have in your army I find is limiting. The concept of the game is well thought out and it lives up to the previous couple of Total War games' standards. I would certainly recommend the game to a friend and already have. However if you have a larger budget I would recommend buying a more recent Total War game.
I hope you found this review helpful and helps you make your decision.
