4 out of 5 stars swords and guns and god - what a mixture!!!   January 4, 2005

this interesting ,mix of post apocaliptic sci-fi & medieval crusading has quite a few fun features. although you'll probably be spending most of your time blasting at things rather than slicing them up with your sword, the close quarters combat is beautifuly animated and very entertaining.

the main complait I might have is the timer - your missions are often against the clock and for those used to a totally liner path may find this frustrating as you often have to look behind something or retrace your steps sereval times before getting out and completing the mission. On top of this, some missions need more than just you completing the objectives...most require you to get out before the level ends...this can be irrating if you get lost.

the sound is great, the graphics are wonderful, but controls can be clunky when fighting groups of bad guys even on the highest spec computer.

if you have a few quid to spare, find a cheap copy and enjoy this odd offering of gaming.

me and my friend were on a quest to buy a cool game cause he just bought ashiney new laptop, oh and how shiney it was. so we popped over to hmv tofind our self a good game. we looked and looked and we couldnt really findn e thing that sparked an interest until i saw this game. Medieval swordssci fi weapons with a gothic post apocolyptic style could you go wrong?well the answer is yes. this is an Egregious (meaning outstandingly bad)game. because i paid good money for this i really tried hard to like it imean reaallly hard i was even trying to tell my self its not that bad.....but boy dont kid ur self it is. first of all it promotes it self as a"team game" well ur team mates in the single player mode might as besomalians with sticks...no scratch that blond somalians with sticks. causethe ai is really poor they hardly help they usually get stuck in sum ofthe environment of the game and so they dont help you. the player classesare pretty useless is well there pretty much all the same apart from themage class. the attacking is poor the sword attack is slow and i found myself using the gun all the time. and its not the most fluid game evertrust me. my friend bought i shiney new laptop a sony viao a 2.8ghz 512mbram and 128mb ati radeon graphics card and well it didnt even bloody work.but it unfortunatly worked on my computer.
what can i say about this......
..... just dont put ur self through the same misery i did
by the way im going to hmv tommorow mourning to try and return it!!!

As a games developer myself, I have to say that this game is rather good. The story is immersive and the graphics are sweet, I was impressed. The single player missions provide you with difficult yet do-able tasks, the balance is perfect. My favourite levels are Styxx, Courtyard, Assimilation Decks and Dark Science. Playing Styxx on multiplayer was nothing short of brilliance, the atmosphere is electric and it is really tactical.
The AI are also very ruthless and hunt you down at every opportunity to slash and shoot your sorry backside. You can never afford to hang around too much for fear of a rocket zooming past your face or a sword slashing away at your heals. Sometimes the game can be a little too intense, and this is my only real criticism of what is, otherwise, a superbly challenging game. Still there's hours and hours of fun, and if you managed to finish it without cheating, I'd be very surprised!!! That leads me on to say about the cheat, it's on the front of the box, how cool is that!! If you bring up the command prompt and type 'Exodus 15:3' you will have access to all the cheats such as fly, loaded (all the weapons), god etc. I just loved the way they managed to fool everyone by having it in full view, as an extract from the bible, and is yet another example of how clever the outfit at Extreme FX (the developers) were.

On a more technical note, this game was demo'd at ECTS on the nVidia and Intel stands, and it is widely known within the industry to have been developed for nVidia GeForce 4 cards with vertex and pixel shaders. ATI support was only added toward the end of development, and they are changing their graphics drivers every few weeks at the moment because of problems with their cards. This explains why the one chap had tremendous problems on his machine. My advice is, if you've got a good nVidia card and Intel CPU, get it, if your on anything else then steer clear.

By the way, there will be no Apocalyptica 2 because the team has since been snapped up by other major game developing companies, which is why patches for ATI cards etc. are not available :).

1 out of 5 stars I'd rate this game 0 stars if I could!   November 13, 2003

Just downloaded the demo from www.fileplanet.com and I'm shocked at how bad this game is. I have a powerful machine with an ATI Radeon 9800 inside and so was expecting graphics as smooth and as nice as the excellent Call Of Duty which runs like greased lightning.

Big mistake! Once the game had actually started, I had problems controlling the character as the frame rate was so bad. And when I say bad, I mean 5fps territory. On top of this, the graphics are really terrible when compared to the latest stuff coming out. It all looks like a very bad Quake 3 mod. Quake 3, now almost 4 years old, looks far superior. Using Call Of Duty as a frame of reference again, just play the Pegasus Bridge section and look at the beautiful water effect on the river, excellent level design and realistic animation, the game constantly running as smooth as silk and then look at this woeful garbage. The sound effects are pathetic although the music is quite good, pretty much the only redeeming feature of this blatantly rushed and unfinished software. The "gameplay" is pretty much non existant and you'd get more enjoyment sticking your head down the toilet and flushing it.

I'm shocked that Konami, a company I have the greatest respect for, would release such trash. At least it explains the price though and I would say, do yourself a favour and steer clear of this rubbish and buy something more deserving, such as Halo or Call Of Duty. Or at least check out the demo on www.fileplanet.com if you're considering buying it.

Let's hope Castlevania makes it to the PC and Apocalyptica 2 doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars They dont like it up em!!   September 24, 2003

It's all very well having a rocket propelled heat seeking, motion tracking, torso obliterating pocket sized nuclear device when your in the mood for dishing out a bit of death. However, the current onslaught of these types of games (eg. UT2003) seems to have taken the thrill out maming others.

This game brings this passion for carnage right back with one simple tactic (even though not original) - the power of MELLEE.

If you are a fan of Jedi Knight 2 then u will love this game. The sword play is very much of the same essence of the light sabre play in Jedi Knight 2, and like JK 2 it's the making of the game.

Set in the future this game (ah-hem) borrows the character and weapon concepts from the Warhammer 40K series often seen in Games Workshop. It has put a different spin on the 40K theme however (maybe for legal reasons) and it works well for the story. The graphics are well put together, however dont consider this game if your pc is not top-spec or somewhere close, i.e Geforce 4 or ati radeon 9700 + .....with high end cpu....etc,etc.

So, this game is all about the sword play, it's a game where you can kill people in a stylish and brutal way and adds new dimensions to a 3rd person shoter. The variety of characters adds depth, and the multiplayer will offer a great longevity to the game. People familiar with the Warhammer 40K series will definately enjoy the theme of this game, as I did.

Verdict....better value than David Blaines dirty nappies, more carnage than Man U/Arsenal Derby.... buy it.
