4 out of 5 stars Box of replacement awesome   July 23, 2010

Going to assume the buyer of this game already knows what the gameplay of dungeon keeper is like and is buying for nostalgia reasons.
Bought this after my original copy had been missing for some time (and pirate versions of the game tended to crash after around 10 minutes). Installation took less than a minute on XP and the cd has the 1.7 patch included on it to bring it up to date.
Loading the games greets you with an all 3d main menu which hasn't improved with age and runs sluggish, however once in-game the fps becomes perfect. Sound works just as it did when the game was new and doesn't appear to have any odd effect on todays hardware.
The game itself runs by default at the same speed as old hardware but if for some reason this seems altered there is an option for 'game speed' in the options menu.
One issue I keep having is that by default the controls use the arrow keys for camera control, this wouldn't be too much of a problem except for the fact that the arrow keys are also used when you possess a creature, this means that to use different creature skills you are constantly reaching to the number keys and back to the arrows whilst your other hand is occupied with the mouse.
Now you'd think that the solution to this would be to change the keys from the arrows to WASD. This works temporarily though since the key config doesn't appear to save between game sessions and needs to be set every time the game is loaded. This may also be fixable if the game has .ini files for its key config but i havne't looked into that yet. The other issue is that pressing Ctrl + S does a quick save, which means that after changing to this keyset, any time you try to zoom out with the keyboard it quicksaves and the 'guide' tells you "quick saved", it queues up this sound every time you hit ctrl + s so this can become a problem. Oh, and you can't change the key combo for quick save in-game.

Despite these minor annoyances the game is still as fun as remembered and with additional levels downloadable from various websites to play in skirmish/LAN multiplayer ("internet dungeon watch" doesn't appear to work) or possibly with friends online via the program 'hamachi', the game should once again last many hours of dungeon building, hero slaying fun.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable   April 24, 2010

I have spent the last few evenings dabbling in this game.

The basic premise is that you dig out your dungeon, which you use to house and train your minions. You then defeat whatever adversary the level demands. It's very simple, in some ways this is part of the charm, but in others I think it holds the game back.

One of the things the game allows you to do is to take control of your minions at will. Unfortunatley the controls are very simple. I think there could have been more done with it. The novelty of walking around your own dungeon never seems to wear off. Although I have managed to get lost a few times.

The graphics are now sadly outdated, but the music and sound effects are good.

There are only a few select things that you can build, which is a shame, as after a while each new dungeon begins to feel a bit samey. Other than that it is a very addictive, gripping game that has kept me entertained. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes the early Warcraft games or Settlers, or even anyone who has always secretly wanted their own lair.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoy an old classic   March 14, 2010

Promptly delivered, easily installed, with the manual on the cd. I bought this game to enjoy an old favourite. Generally the length of each game is self-limiting, which I regard as an advantage. Good fun.

4 out of 5 stars Dungeon keeper 2   January 23, 2010

A equal to the award winning classic this game by Electronic arts ticks all the right boxes. You take the role of a demon trying to build his underground lair (dungeon) in order to grow stronger and eventually take over the pesky humans trying to disturb your evil plans. In essence it is very much like any other god-sim where you build rooms to keep workers happy and give them places to eat, places to train and sleep. You need to make sure your dungeons inhabitants are happy otherwise the other stronger demons wont want to come live in your carefully build lair. Once you have built a decent enough stronghold you start to dig outwards until you find the human dungeon and try to fight them till either you or they die. One of the most fun aspects of this game is the ability to take control of any of the dungeons inhabitants and walk around your own creation in a 3d view. All these nifty features couples with a cheeky almost morbid sense of humor make this one of the classic games that every PC gamer must own.
