Amazon.co.uk Preview
With all the talk of next generation consoles it's somewhat ironic that the most graphically impressive new game is actually PC real-time strategy title Age of Empires III. The last game in the series was a rather clinical looking 2D isometric game but this new iteration features some of the most complex, organic looking 3D graphics ever seen on any system.

Thankfully the gameplay appears just as developed as you take control of a civilisation from around the time that Age of Empires II left off in the 16th century and continues up to 1850, as you battle to take control of the New World. Gameplay is actually split between the Americas though and your home city back in Europe, which you must also maintain and upgrade in order to keep the populace happy.

The most exciting element though is undoubtedly the new combat system, where the dull and mechanical "tank rushes" of the previous games have been replaced with stunning looking battles of gunpowder and sword blades as you fight angry natives and rival colonisers.

As is demanded of any PC game nowadays there's also a cool sounding multiplayer mode, with the eight different civilizations you can control allowing for a large variety of different play styles. That's if you can actually gather your wits enough to form a strategy and stop ogling the frankly incredible looking graphics. -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

Product Description

  • Engage in epic strategic battles. As players control the action, they can experience a new level of exciting combat with realistic physics effects, and have the option of engaging in battle with blades, gunpowder or both. Victory depends on the player's strategic battle plan.
  • Develop and strengthen a unique, customized Home City. The Home City represents a player's capital back in Europe and plays a supporting role in the attempt to control the New World. The better the player performs in the New World, the more powerful his Home City becomes. Players can customise their Home City to reflect unique personality traits, making the Home City a vital character in the game.
  • Explore a vibrant New World. Players can take advantage of elements of the colonial time period, including the ability to ally with Native Americans. They also can explore and find new resources in the Amazon rain forest, recover buried treasure from Caribbean islands, hunt bison on the Great Plains, compete to establish trade routes, and fortify the coast of New England.
  • Experience stunning graphics. Players will witness new lighting effects and shadows while immersed in a world that feels bright and sunny, yet which has a softness and depth that is revolutionary to PC games. Thanks to the new physics engine, players will never see the same scene twice.
  • Discover culturally diverse civilisations. Gamers can play as the British and have a stellar economy, or play as the French and easily ally with Native Americans. They can choose to play as the Spanish and have more support from their home country in Europe. Players have the option of playing as one of eight civilisations and, whichever one is chosen, players are guaranteed a unique and fulfilling experience.

2 out of 5 stars Not what it's cracked up to be   November 5, 2009
P. Oor
To keep this short and sweet. I bought this game off amazon having waited sufficiently for the price to drop and after having played it all I can say is that it is still not value for money. The old games were much better in most respects, this one seems to have regressed: annoying features like not being able to garrison towers or castles with offensive units anymore or the fact that for some reason the ability to control the tactics of your units, which was the best feature of the old games, has disappeared; now your men will just scatter and wonder off instead of retaining their formation - even more stupid considering this game's emphasis on rifle armed infantry who should fight in lines.
A real shame and quite frankly a crime against the genius of the previous games.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but old   August 27, 2009

as expected poor graphics due to its 2004 release, however fun, and my mate wont play anything else when hes round.(must be good)

4 out of 5 stars Tokugawa   July 17, 2009

It is an enjoyable and fun game learning about the different civiliasation and the various buildings. Being able to use the expansion pack was fun. The game is long lasting and you don't get bored of playing it, it is possible to become additive to the game. The graphics could be better. Tokugawa has spoken.

5 out of 5 stars AOE 3...   June 18, 2009

This is a good game typical of the AOE series. Graphics are good yet slowed down my computer with navy fights. This can be changed so your PC won't lag as much using Microsoft's website.A very fun game it will keep you busy for a while. The only downside is that I thought the campaign was rather short (not like previous games) so this means you have to buy expansion packs if your in to your story line games. But I defiantly recommended this to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars WITH OUT MATCH   March 1, 2009

i can not understand why so many people despise this game and say its rubbish compared to the old ones well if you ask me the old ones suck and i never even played them for more than 20 minutes before i realised they sucked they suck so much and the graphics suck to my eyes were bleeding because the graphics sucked so much. and gameplay sucked infact my granny won the hole campaighn in ten minutes.

okay im going to stop insulting age of empires two and one and go on to 3

three is by far way better than the others its graphics healed my eyes from the wounds inflicted from two and one because they are ultimate. my granny dropped over because the campaign amazed her so and it has a good storyline. gameplays good wait no its not good its excellent it plays so well i cant stop playing the sides are excellent and there actually unique especially ottomans they rule...

strongly recommend chuck 1 and 2 in the bin or give um to your grandmothers because 3 is the best of em all

i hope they make a 4th one
