5 out of 5 stars Medieval Life   May 24, 2010

One of the best building/ management games I have played. Has a long Life. You can either play the Campaign, where you follow a strict set of Scenarios to complete missions or you can play a continuous game. Beware however, the game can only ever be installed three times on a PC, however, if for instance you are upgrading your PC, you can call the Customer Care Team who will allow you to install more times. One of my biggest bugbears of the game is that it will NOT run on Windows Seven as it is a 32 bit game.

3 out of 5 stars Needs a proper manual   April 26, 2010
Alan Maxwell (Maidenhead, England)
I was surprised when I bought this game that the manual was only a few pages long and only covered the basic controls and menu options. Nothing about strategy and the object of the game etc. I keep having problems trying to do things with nowhere to look for guidance. I found some sites on the net which help a bit but you can't refer to them when you are playing the game. I am now towards the end of chapter II but I am stuck as the only quest I have is supplying the Rope Works, but I have supplied it and am producing rope like it's going out of fashion(!) but the quest is not clearing and I can't move forward. I have installed the latest patches, but there still seem to be some bugs in it. I'm sure that if there was a useful manual the game would deserve more stars as it is quite interesting (when it works).

1 out of 5 stars Not For Me Either   March 21, 2010

Ubisoft have always been bad luck for me. Their early games crashed so often as to be not worth the effort and the last time I bought one, about two years ago, it had such insane graphics requirements it refused to install on all three computers in this house, two of which were less than 18 months old.

I guess they must be doing something right for someone, because they seem to have grown from being a fairly obscure French game designer whose products had more flash than programming ability to seeming almost as ubiquitous as their name suggests. But not for me. Not when they start making such ridiculous DRM restrictions. There isn't a game in the world that is so important to me as to submit to their draconian demands.

I won't be buying anything from them and anyone who wants to stop the spread of such rubbish should take the same stance and support other game companies instead. There are hundreds of great games out there to choose from. And if this becomes the industry norm? Well then I'll stick with replaying the games I already own instead.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped   March 18, 2010

Anno 1404 combines three major elements of strategy gaming in one. Trading, city building and combat. Unfortunately for me, since it's the element that interests me the least, Anno 1404 tends to lean more towards trading. Consequently I don't find the game particularly engrossing... boring even.

Anno 1404 also seems to place a heavier burdon on my computer hardware than similar strategy games. My PC isn't a super hot dedicated gaming machine but it does run MS flight simulator with silky smoothness for example but suffers slow down and on screen jerkyness with Anno 1404, even on the lowest quality graphics settings. I'm not sure what is going on there.

I don't think it's going to be long before I uninstall Anno 1404 and I won't need to be worrying about the DRM limited reactivations. One was enough.

This game will not work with my high end machine with Windows 7 installed. confirmed by Ubisoft that it was not made to work with W7, so unable to give a review of the game.
