Product Description
The Settlers II is an economic simulation, giving the player a variety of strategic choices. You have to build up a large and complex functioning settlement and to defend it against attacks. But it is not the only objective: you have to make the economy run, to ensure a smooth transport of goods by strategically placing roads and buildings. The final goal is the domination of the map.

5 out of 5 stars Settlers II 10th anniversary   July 15, 2010
Ruth
Despite a number of contacts with Ubisoft (creators of the game) and, at their suggestion, contact with Hewlett Packard, I have been unable to make this game work at all. The message comes up "programme not responding" and the code is "not recognised". I have a 7 month old Compaq CQ2300UK Desktop with Windows XP.

I still have the original Settlers II disk from many years ago (probably about 20) and have spent many hours playing and replaying the game, although it is not too happy with Windows XP and crashes sometimes, and was looking forward to the extra games on the new version.

I would thoroughly recommend anyone with a computer able to run the new game to purchase it. I am just very disapponted my won't.

5 out of 5 stars Settlers - back to basics, and more fun for it!   June 20, 2010
Sean (UK)
I owned the original Settlers on the Amiga, and have had pretty much each installation since - including the newly released Settlers VII.

Whilst each later intallment has evolved, I have often thought that they have moved away in part from the quaint simplicity of the original. At one point the franchise seemed to be turning into Age of Empires (a good game, but not the same thing at all). I also frequently got frustrated when the settlers in "Rise of the Empires" went on strike because of lack of soap or shirts - don't these people realise they at war!!!

Settlers 2: 10th Anniversary Edition takes things back to the beautiful, simple gameplay of the originals. The graphics have been nicely updated in a way which is quite simpathetic to the original - not realistic, more "cute". Apart from this, a lot remains unchanged. The plot of the campaign is new, but it was never a game where the storyline was intergral to the enjoyment, more an excuse for the variety in landscapes and architecture.

If you want a fast-paced, involved game where you are frantically trying to complete missions, move characters and armies to specific points, evolve a technology tree and balance a stable economy at the same moment, I would suggest Settlers VII is more for you (or a career as Prime Minister - the pay is better, and you don't have to take it so seriously). However, if you like a more calm game in which you can truly lose yourself and watch things grow at a pleasing pace, I would thoroughly recommend this title.

If you have only played later Settlers games, buy this to see what you have missed.

If you played the original, buy this to remind yourself why you loved Settlers in the first place.

Either way, be prepared for hours, if not days and weeks, of you life to disappear!

4 out of 5 stars Its like the 90's all over again   March 3, 2010

this game takes you back to when graphics wern't great but gameplay was. With the gameplay perfectly waited to the more you play the harder it gets and each level taking longer than the last its more than worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A few bugs, but great playability!   January 20, 2010
Mr. Charles A. Budd (uk)
I'll admit, I'm a Settlers fan (oh the wasted hours of my life!) This edition of Settlers 2 is a very charming update. The graphics are much better, and the ability to zoom in close is amazing! If you don't know the game, it involves setting up a little kingdom. You have to cut trees and stone for building; mine coal, gold and iron to make tools and weapons; and grow food to feed your miners. Then you have to build guard houses or fortresses to expand your territory. There is always an enemy, or two, to conquer before you can pass through the mystical gate to the next level.
The first couple of levels are easy, giving you plenty of hints and time to get the hang of it, and by that time you'll be hooked. The great thing about Settlers is that the graphics are so endearing you care about your little kingdom, you want to see it flourish. There are a few difficult levels, that might take a few gos to complete, but that only makes this game better.
There are two downsides. If you switch on autosave (which I recommend) the game freezes for a few seconds. If you autosave often, this can be irritating. The other is that usually the cursor arrow works right at the tip of the arrow, but sometimes the 'active' point moves further down the arrow and stays there. Sometimes I save and reload the game, and this usually works. But not always. These bugs are irritating, but the addictive playability of the game kept me playing on.

4 out of 5 stars As Good As It Ever Was   January 10, 2010

I used to own the Original version of Settlers 2 back in the good old days.
I remember spending countless hours (certainly hundreds) watching my little people rush about some of my favorites were the Stone cutter and the fisherman (When you buy this game spend some time watching those two they are well worth the time).
Eventually the disk was damaged and I could not get a replacement.
I got this version at 11 am (gmt yesterday) it is now 9.39 am And I only switched the program off a few minutes ago (you can leave it running all night and come back to HUGE stockpiles and im devious).
It is every bit as good as the original version.

Some things are slightly superior.
The designs of some of the buildings have improved (I particularly like the new Asian buildings)
The individual settlers are now much easier to identify (different nations have different appearances)
The Sound quality is considerably better.

The Map Editor will take some getting to grips with but allows the creation of some very detailed maps.
You can place all the resources and every individual tree.
For those of us who always find we don't have enough fish you can ensure that every beach is stocked with fish with a simple mouse click (logical Editor presets).

I can also recomend this game to anyone who likes games you can play for months at a time without getting bored.
No two games will be the same as the AI on the opponents is adaptable and will respond to your actions.

So if you like strategic games with amusing fishermen this is for you.

However if you don't like happy bustling people its best avoided.
