Different and depressingly degenerate July 25, 2010 Braam Command & Conquer has been the pride of Real Time strategy since it surfaced in 1995. And since the very first installment, I have been buying every sequel without the slightest bit of doubt? Why? Because even the most mediocre C&C game would still blow our minds... right? Clearly not.
While there are many flaws, the most notable is the gameplay dynamic. Basebuilding is no longer prominent and the only available structures in the game belongs to the Defense Class. But get this: for the first time in the history of Command & Conquer, there is a cap on units... and structures. This implies that expansion is a thing of the past. Instead the player moves around capturing nodes while trying to stay alive and ahead in the technology race. It all sounds very exciting but it gets old very quickly. Building large armies of tanks and aircraft is a distant memory. Strategic depth is limited to speed, "upgrade" collection and some unit micro-management. But it doesn't stop there.
Here is why this game is no good:
1. The graphics are terrible. If you want better graphics, rather play Command & Conquer 3 from 3 years ago.
2. The storyline is less believable and engaging than an episode of Walker: Texas Ranger. Command & Conquer used to be famous for its movie sequnces and thrilling (though sometimes comical) storylines. This one develops from nothing to even less. And the secret behind Kane: his past, purpose and divine plan for his followers has been cut short due to what seems like a lack of ideas.
3. The unit cap: be prepared to build roughly 12 decent units to go crusading through the mission.
4. Lack of buildings: No expansion possibilities and buildings are no more than static units in this game.
5. Goodbye to harvesting: harvesting has been replaced by collection of upgrade points for units and abilities - the key to doing well in the game.
6. Online account restrictions: the new EA Online system requires you to be connected at all times. So if a connection is lost, progress may be lost or it might just be impossible to play the game.
Considering what have been done with the franchise in the past, there is no excuse for this level of mediocrity. I doubt whether this game will appeal even to newcomers, nevermind fans of the original game. A word of advice: play a demo before buying this game to avoid what seems to be a very common disappointment.
A major disappointment July 21, 2010 Zoonie I have been playing C and C ever since it was first released, and I was of the opinion that Red Alert 3 was possibly the worst game ever. Now I know C and C 4 holds that title.
The game play has been total changed, now you have to level up to be able to produce units, there is no tiberian collection, the MCV has been remodelled so you can only make a few types of unit with each one of the 3.
You have to be online at all times to play, why? If I want a multiplayer game fine, but if I am using the solo game why do I have to be online?
I saw the bad feed back on this game but as I have played all the other C and C games I wanted to finish the series but I wish I had not bothered.
Abysmal! July 14, 2010 Malcolm Well, i should have listened to all the other reviews n in Amazon and elsewhere. Have been a fan of numerous C&C's throughout the years. This folks is not just the most appalling game i have ever played in the series but the worst game i have ever played!! If i could demand my money back, i would. I would urge those individuals to steer well clear of it. Or at least pick up a very cheap second hand version. Disappointing!
The worst C&C ever? July 11, 2010 25 year gamer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow, after being such a big C&C fan for such a long time, I wondered if I was the only one who didn't enjoy the new one. So I checked back and read the reviews and looks like everyone else feels the same! I'd looked forward to this new release as much anyone else, oh well, back to the earlier versions I guess!
c & c 4 July 8, 2010 waynewoo this must be the worst game in the series, i am unable to get it to work and after looking at numerous forums i have given up, there are just too many problems with this game to even bother trying, is my worst buy yet!!!
