A good game, but still lacking the original Magic July 30, 2010 B. Ashley I've been a fan of the Settlers since its first incarnation when I owned it on the Amiga. It was a magical game, completely original and endless fun. The height of the series, for me, was Settlers 4 where there was enough variety and concentration on the economy, effective trade routes, and of course the military aspect.
Then something happened to the series... Heritage of Kings tried to do things differently, and it failed.
They got back on track for 6, but suddenly it all became about graphics and the original gameplay slowly slipped away.
Settlers 7 does return to its routes a little, but it is suddenly more complex in areas that were not necessary and simplified in areas that made the original game magical.
On top of this, the DRM that Ubisoft has installed mean that, if you have a patchy internet connection, you have less of an experience than people who have pirated the game.
Die-hard fans? Get it.
Casual settlers or newcomers would be better of finding a copy of version 4.
Disappointing Performace July 3, 2010 Dave S Sparrow (Norwich) This game was very much a disappointment. It seemed like the game itself could have been very good, a complex strategy game driven by production with some pleasant cartoon style graphics and some semblance of storyline too.
Unfortunately this was all ruined by the game's performance. It ran like a dog on my computer, which is very high spec, so if I had trouble others definitely would. The need to be connected to the internet all the time is also an annoyance. Above all this feels like such a waste, a good game ruined by sloppy work and over-protection from the publishers. Features like publishing your performance to facebook would have been better left out and the programmers time spent on the game's performance instead.
a let down June 19, 2010 R. Gilpin (WREXHAM, Clwyd, GB) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am getting so fed up with every new game wanting you to log on to a specialist site for you to play the game!! it slows down the gameplay where its like being back in the Amiga days.
this is unplayable, so slow moving, even though the scenery is superb, it shows that they have concentrated on the looks and not the gameplay.
I have played every settlers game, and this is pointless, and I have stopped playing it, but the wonderful new idea of internet log in games has made this worthless as cannot even trade it for something better.
I dont think I will buy any new game that has to be logged in to play, and I would suggest all consumers do the same, it ruins the gameplay and games publishers spend more time on dealing with their web pages instead of the game itself.
buy settlers 6 rise of an empire, far better and much more fun
Ok, but not brilliant June 16, 2010 David Morison I was introduced to Settlers at number 6, and I was instantly hooked. The game had just the right balance of resource gathering, economic management and war. I absolutely loved the campaign through to the end.
I was disappointed with the addon for Settlers 6 as I felt they were trying to squeeze extra hours of gameplay in without a particularly meaningful story or any exciting new challenges.
I am even more disappointed with Settlers 7 I'm afraid. DRM issues aside, the game is far more complicated than Settlers 6, so I spend most of the game figuring out what buildings I need to buy to go up how many prestige points in order to unlock prestige levels and build new buildings. And that is just one aspect of the confusion. A lot of your mind's work will be taken away from actual strategy in favour of understanding game mechanics. Something that I felt Settlers 6 handled much better.
As many are saying there are also the DRM issues. They have not been too much of a burden to me because I have a pretty reliable internet connection. However, a couple of times it has faultered and I get a message on the screen saying I need to reconnect before I can continue with the game, so yes it is annoying.
To summarise, if you are a Settlers fan then this is probably worth buying. If you are not a Settlers fan yet but want to get your feet wet, try Settlers 6 first. If you love it, move on to 7, if you don't, save your money and buy something else!
great disappointment June 11, 2010 Christina Hawkins (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After loving heritage of kings and rise of an empire, I was really looking forward to this game. It is awful. It appears to be a mish mash of settlers and anno games and everything is paced very fast - too fast in my opinion. With the need to be online all the time, even though in single player mode, any interruption to the service (and in our area these are frequent) stops play. I have really tried several times to play through campaign and custom maps, but give up each time. A total waste of money and a huge disappointment. I will think twice - or three times before buying another settlers game.
