2 out of 5 stars Ruined a classic (see final point)   July 1, 2010

As this product is a slightly-updated version of Sid Meier'S Civilization II (PC CD), this review is a comparison of the 2. You can check out reviews of the original Civ2 for more details of gameplay etc. Please note, this game does not play out-of-the-box on new operating systems - you must download a patch (available online).

Test of Time is exactly the same as the original in terms of gameplay.
The differences are:

'Updated' graphics.
- Terrain looks slightly different but not much better. Units are now animated i.e. when they attack/move. Cities look slightly different. New sounds too for unit movement/attack etc.

New icons.
- Every tech / improvement has a new icon. They are more complex than before which merely makes them harder to identify (this is bad!)

More game-types.
- By this I mean you can play as a whole host of new civilizations including aliens, on a number of different worlds. However, gameplay is exactly the same, units/terrain just look different and have different names.

No more cutscenes / City council! (this is bad!)
- No videos when you complete a wonder, No meeting with the city council.

and finally...

!!!! THE INTERFACE IS RUINED !!!!
- Civ2 had a great interface - everything was where is needed to be, it was a joy to play. Test of Time turned this interface on its head - nothing is where it should be, it's awkward, all sidebars and dialogue boxes have a horrible textured background making them harder to read. In the city view you now have to scroll between unit support/improvements/units in city/etc, rather than having them separate to view all at once. I could go on...

In conclusion, there is a reason this game is 1/5th of the price of the original - The interface is awful and takes all the fun out of playing. My advice is to buy the original Sid Meier'S Civilization II (PC CD). Its a timeless classic which is a pleasure to play even today.

4 out of 5 stars Very complicated   May 4, 2002

This is a very addictive strategy game. It's also extremely complicated. It's a bit slow-moving for a lot of people, but there are so many diferent things to ressearch and build. Every scenario played turns out differently. The rules are horribly complicated and founding cities can be very hard to get right if you don't know what you're doing.

This is not a game for people with little patience.

5 out of 5 stars My Opinion on Civilization II Test of Time   April 6, 2001

Test of time is a great game. It is a great improvement on civ 2. With easier to customize rules, multiplayer games, particularly hotseat, animated graphics, many worlds to explore, the fantasy games based on norse mythology, particulary the Buetos, the cloud people, where you get to colonize the clouds and traverse the skies, and many other options, test of time allows a lot more and therefore is brilliant. These are the good points. A few bad points though, not many so that's good; In Hotseat mode diplomacy is handled by the AI. These results in unwanted wars, being denied exchanges and gifts being given to other players when you did not want to give them anything. The AI is very easy to manipulate, the human players should be able to control their own diplomacy. Also you can not see the computer turns, this is annoying, especially when it comes to barbarians. Internet games are rather difficult to set up. The extention on the original is not very realistic. Editing the graphics is far too hard. You can't load games or scenarios from the old civ 2. You can use old maps and the old map editor, but this only allows maps for the original game, other map types you have to work out what becomes what. It only comes with one scenario of its own, and creating new scenarios is painfully slow. Also the beloved high council, the city viewer and the wonder videos have disappeared! However despite these set backs there is far more to do on test of time than the original.

It's worth buying, unless you actually can wait for Civ 3...

3 out of 5 stars Civ 2 is GREAT   December 25, 2000

Civilisation 2 is my favourite game ever. I've had it for a few years and i still play it! If you don't have Civ 2, buy this now, if you don't, no point in buying this-but Alpha centauri instead. But Civ 2 is the all time number one ssential game for any self-respecting gamer

3 out of 5 stars If you don't already have Civ II, then it's good, otherwise-   August 25, 2000

Civilisation II was one of my favourite games, and I must say that this has better graphics etc. But apart from that it's not worth updating to this. Yes you get to go on and see what happens after your civilisation has landed on Alpha Centauri, and you can play on several other worlds/scenarios, but, it really is just more of the same. If you don't have Civ II you may as well get it, but don't bother otherwise.
