| Customer Reviews: A decision making game in every sense June 28, 2007 Stuart (Ireland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First off The main difference between This Gold edition and the orginal Galactic Civilizations is the addition of 2 new civilizations to play against or ally with or trade, a new big campaign where you complete objectives during it to reveal a storyline of more of the Alterian civilization and there connection to the humans and others. I havent not played the campaign much however the new races plus the updated content are reason enough for me and im sure others to buy this updated version of the game. There are many updates on the website connected to the game if you want to download new ships and political parties or even research items.
For any1 who has never played the game - This game is 1 of the most customizable strategy games there is. You can play as only the humans however you get to choose what type of political party you wan to play as. For example choosing The Technologists will give you a party bonus of 20% Research and an extra sensors advantage but if you choose The Industrialists youll get a production advantage in military and social.
Then theres customizing your name of your civilization your leaders name(you of course) and then you have 10 points to put into about 25 categories of your choosing. You could put all these points into economics to have a big boost to your credits from the begining of the game or balance your points out into loyaltly and solidering and weapons, whatever you choose out of the 20 to 25 categories. The categories also include sensors, repair rates, growth rate of population, trade, number of trade routes plenty more.
You play with in this gold edition 7 other Alien Races, who you can choose if you wish to be evil or good or neutral in their behaviour. You also get to make Moral decisions when you colonize a world to enslave a stone age race who already live there or let them live beside you in peace with a minor production loss. Conquering them would give a production boost. As the game prgresses if you are being evil in your playing style good civilizations will behave untrustoworthy of you and even attack you if your too bad. You must create your own choices and this is the fantastic thing about this game. You can go right through a game with no military if you wanted to risk it and be an economic power its all up to you.
It is hard at times to know when is the right time to build this or that but the inteligence of each race is choosable aswell. Cultural Influence is a factor also and nearby worlds will join you from sheer Heavy Influence from your trade and culture through buildings you have built becuase of the amazing things your building.
However this is no age of empires there are no formation battles or tremendous Phaser/Photon Battles of Birth of The federation, ships do fight in the game and explode but just like on a chess board so dont expect to send knights in to wreck havoc. This is a space strategy game with the decisions being the main gameplay. Starbases though are cruical to advantages and these can have many add ons built onto them to increase production, but you dont get to see them in any huge light, but there there to view on the map. The game has very nice graphics too and it doesnt need any big graphics card to run.
If you like Birth of the federation or any strategy game I recomend it highly. The options for choosing your very own perosnel style in a game are surely unbeatable for choice of another game and you can set the difficulty to very easy to learn what to do.
Superb Strategy Game March 9, 2007 Mr. T. Stanton 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is superb in every sense of the word. The Gold edition contains Gal Civ + The Altarian Prophecy expansion. There is so much to do in this game. If you've played Civilization IV it is very similiar but in space. And like Civilization there are a number of ways to win the game such as Political, Technology, Cultural and Conquest Victories. You can create your own Civilization if any of the default characters do not take your fancy. You can also select which size galaxy to play from tiny to gigantic which effects gameplay considerably as well as selcting the planet density and several other setups. Once you have setup your civilization and galaxy size you can also setup how the other players will behave. With this game you can change everything from the ships to the planets. I suggest something like GalCiv writer as well as a decent paint package to draw the ships but Altarian Prophecy comes with a MAP editor, Scenario Editor and a Campaign Editor. Several mods are on the Gal Civ website so theres plenty to download if you want to change the game. I really suggest you get this game as it is brilliant and you will spend several late nights playing it. A different game every time which so many customisable options. No multiplayer as of yet but the AI is top notch and it feels like you are playing against human players. Thats where this game shines. All the reviews say that the AI is superb which it is. I suggest buying Galactic Civilizations II as well as the new expansion Dark Avatar which I have both of. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay even better. This game is supported by Stardock. Every so often they release patches for the games so you will always be up to date with the latest patch. There customer service is 1st class and its so easy to use. Once youve bought the games and registered your serial numbers you never need the cd again. Throw it in the bin lol You will never need it again. Even if you uninstall the game in the future if you need it back simply log onto stardock and enter your account details and bingo. Download all the games again. You wont find a better game than this other than Gal Civ 2 + Dark Avatar so one word of advice. BUY IT!!
Galactic Civilizations gets better April 26, 2005 mbogle (ireland) 39 out of 39 found this review helpful
After the disappointment of Masters of Orion 3 I followed a thread in their boards singing the praises of Galactic Civilisations. I purchased the game for download (this was when the game was not available here in Europe) and was not disappointed. It is a great space strategy game with a high replay ability factor as each game is different. You can alter each of the 8 races difficulty levels individually and the computer prepares random maps and starting positions. You can choose tiny maps-a couple of hours or a Gigantic galaxy - several days of fun. Over a year later I am still playing the game as the aftercare service offered by Stardock has been second to none and the random maps ensure replayability. The Gold Edition includes both the original game and the expansion pack 'The Altarian Prophecy' which is great fun to play as it allows you to follow a campaign trail and test out your strategies against pre-made levels. A great way to pass the hour or weekend, whatever is your preference but I would only buy if you enjoyed the 'Civilization' turn based style of strategy game which is taken in my opinion to a higher level. With the release of the Gold edition if you have not yet bought this game then it is excellent value for money.
