Product Description Civilization IV will come to life like never before in a beautifully detailed, living 3D world that will elevate the gameplay experience to a whole new level. Civilization IV has already been heralded as one of the top ten games of 2005, and a must-have for gamers around the globe!
Amazon.co.uk Preview Civilization is one of those games that had the unfortunate luck of being pretty much perfect the first time around. Unfortunate because it means that the developers didn't really have much else to do for any of the sequels. Not until number three anyway, at which point they almost ruined everything by overcomplicating it. In a nod to the graphical ability of modern day PCs the graphics have been upgraded all the way from rubbish to okay-ish. Actually, the 3D effect as you zoom out to a view of the whole globe is quite nice but otherwise this is not going to be giving Doom 3 any sleepless nights. The far more important changes are to the gameplay which has had all the overcomplicated elements from Civ III ripped out and, most interestingly, many of the features from the original that had been considered sacrosanct. City riots and rebellions are now extremely rare and other tedious elements such as pollution have been removed. This all adds up to a tighter, faster paced game that doesn't get bogged down once you get a lot of cities up and running. A new team-based online modes attempts to add a similar injection of speed to the multiplayer - although whether that will prove as successful remains to be seen. More promising is a greater emphasis on religion in the game, as well as great people from history that can help morale, combat or research and sometimes all three. With strategy games becoming ever rarer Civ IV looks like it could finally make them, if not fashionable, at least popular again. -- Harrison Dent This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

PC Games Civilization set June 4, 2010 Mrs. Elaine Gosnell (U.K) The set comprises a story of how to form a Civilization from scratch. It's a little like Romans etc and gives a good insight at how in a nutshell countries can be expanded and how they can be formed.
The play is a little complicated and a knowledge of stragedy types games is a requirement when playing. It's not all combat as in other types of games, but this helps when making agreements and trading etc when playing.
It's a very time consuming game, but depending on what you want from it, it does grip you sometimes.
A good set and great to play over a set-period of time.
The price was quite good and it was well packaged, arriving as specified.
Civilization IV March 27, 2010 K. Nicholas (UK) Bought this for my son last month, and he was hooked on it from the first day!
Completely downhill May 19, 2009 Mr. Robert C. Drysdale (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have played CIV III for a long time and it was a classic. It was addictive and the possibilities were endless. You were kept gripped and entertained for hours.
However, i bought this new one thinking that it could continue and the endless hours of playing it would be better. How wrong i was. The game has gone backwards in the fun you gain from it, despite the many new features which take too long to understand well enough to play well. The main problem is that it takes so long to get things going and is hard to see what you've accomplished. It has gone downhill and backwards.
The only thing i can pick up on that has become better, is the graphics which are very good, but this alone does not improve the game in the slightest.
I will go back to CIV III happily and ignore the fact this game came out as it really shouldn't have done in the first place.
Not Good Enough April 9, 2009 I. M. Knight (Huddersfield, England) I am extremely disappointed in this new edition of the civilization series. There is some improvement in graphics but when you compare this to other similar games it is a bit pathetic (look at the Total War series). The worlds you create are a bit larger but there is nothing more to the game play even compared to Civ 2, which is the last one I had. A full game seemed a bit short as well.
All-in-all not worth it even at this low price, I only hope the next incarnation improves comprehensively.
Civilization IV - 3/5 January 31, 2009 Borry 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Plot: You control one of many Civilizations to try and stand the test of time.
Graphics: For the kind of game that it is, the graphics are pretty good.
Controls: Can look rather daunting at first, but once in the swing of it, it's pretty easy to grasp.
Lifespan: Although you can complete once civilization fairly quickly, the opportunity to have a different game each time are endless.
Overall: Although I didn't particularly like it due to it being not my kind of game, if you do like strategy / turn-based games this is one of the best of its kind.
