5 out of 5 stars Steep learning curve but extremely immersive   July 16, 2010
W. Plant (Netherlands)
The lack of tutorials makes this a hard game to understand fully. There is a list of video tutorials available which makes it easier to understand the basic mechanics of the game. If you love turn based strategy games in general you will love this game.

The way you can develop your empire is very personal and you can choose numerous different paths and combinations that can be lethal for your enemies or yourself, such as changing your government, which weapons to research, trade boycotts, alliances. The implementation of ship design and custom race creation makes this an extremely customizable game.

Three fantastic games for an amazing price.

Overal an amazing strategy game that will never let you sleep again.

5 out of 5 stars space is big, really big.   May 14, 2010

i found galactic civilisations whilst looking for an imperium galactica replacement. my initial forray ended in utter slaughter for my civilisation but i was so impressed by its potential for hours of mindless enjoyment i carried on and had another go. it really is imersive and draws you in. i play as earth, seems like an easy choice. the downside is the planet exploration, which can take ages and if you opponents find allien tech, like mine did, then large ships which are almost totaly without peers will devour your forces with ease, a bit like a single borg cube in startrek. its worth a go though just for the money alone. robGalactic Civilizations 2: Ultimate Edition (PC CD)

1 out of 5 stars Not Fit For Purpose   January 16, 2010

Quite some time since I have found a game that satisfies that "just one more turn" feeling that leaves you shattered the next day from staying up too late. All the more frustrating then that, with a game that could be great, after updating via Impulse througn Stardock, it should be sooooo buggy as to be unplayable. Out of the box it was mostly fine; however it finally crashed - nothing worked on the PC: couldn't ctrl/alt/del (indeed I got a message saying task manager couldn't be found); couldn't alt>tab; couldn't do anything to shut down, except switch the PC off via the reset button(never something I like doing). So I updated my graphic card driver; then went to Stardock, went through all the hassle of installing "Impulse" (why do I have to bother with doing this?); downloaded the update; uninstalled Impulse; went back to playing and now, virtually every time I play, my game ends with a crash and the only way to get the computer back is to reset. Goods sold in this condition merit, to my mind, the description of "not fit for purpose". I want my money back!!!!

Galactic Civilizations 2: Ultimate Edition (PC CD)

Could be excellent game if the updated version did not to crash when reaching advanced levels of the game, I followed the invention path to deliver myself to an other plane of existence, when the game crashed. I tried another route to win the game and similar thing happened. It was particularly annoying as I had gained much influence through superb diplomacy and not one shot fired or alien alienated. The updated version is a far better play but not at all stable and you wonder why it was released onto the market if not tested properly.

The earlier version that you get before upgrade is still playable and whatever you do one alien or another will decide to attack you prematurely which does not allow sufficient defensive strategic development. This spoils the nature of the game but there must be a solution I still have to find, if it is there I shall find it!!

Unsure whether part of the problem may lie in the fact that both versions are stored in the same folder and both can be played; there may be an issue with open of a previous dynamic link library and the software not getting the correct information. It is a very two dimensional game which spoils it really, though it has a complex strategy, if played at maximum size galaxies, with maximum opponents it simply cannot compute and eventually will crash on the opponents moves.

It should deserve a higher rating but not with the associated problems.

4 out of 5 stars now runs like a dream   April 5, 2009

Further to earlier reviews, The bugs and update problems seem to have been fixed, and the process of updating the game after installation seems pretty simple now.
The game itself is really very good if this genre appeals to you; the scale of the game is epic. I just wish they'd gone to town more on the battle sequences, a la 'hegemonia' perhaps (when is anyone going to make a game as beautiful as that again?)
All in all, a great RTS space game.
