Addictive. I sat down to place this game about 7 at night, after about, what I thought was an hour, 4 hours had passed. Mediocre graphics and doesn't show full screen on my 40" tv I have my PC coming through but that isn't the games fault. Good game.
An excellent strategy game March 26, 2010

I purchased this game when it was orignally released as well as the add on pack 'Alien Crossfire' when that was released too. I have played it more or less since then. It is a very absorbing game which eats time like very few games do. Often you will find yourself looking at the clock and not believing the time! The idea of the game is simple. Factions are different in their ideology - whichever one you choose offers advantages that the other does not have but allows for a different style of play if you choose them. You build your empire and once in contact with other factions you can begin to trade with them and even forge alliances. If I had two minor issues with the game it would be that the AI can be a touch moody and once an alliance is broken it never is quite the same. The AI is moronic at times despite having no chance of victory. Worst of all though is that sometimes it can be difficult to pick out where your units are on the map as it can feel a touch cluttered. These are minor niggles to be honest and don't spoil what is a thoroughly addictive and enjoyable game. If you are looking for a low cost strategy game and have yet to try Alpha Centauri I can thoroughly recommend it. It has all the things you would expect and excellent gameplay. A must have in my view.

This is quite literally the best turn-based strategy game ever. No Civilisation game before or since, has come close to the amount of options this game gives you. You can create your own units, set different types of government styles, and elect a planetary council. The tech tree and 'wonder' movies all add to the personality that shines through this game. Don't let anyone tell you the Civ series has evolved since this game, if anything it's gone backwards to appeal to the masses. For a game made in 1999 this is still the king of strategy games. Alpha Centauri is long overdue a sequel or remake, it's what fans have been asking for. Instead we get yet another version of Civ, number 5.

This was a nice cheep game and I thought I would give it a go....
got it loaded it and... would not work!
not a good start! Looked it up on the net and found a patch for it that worked!
Makes me ask the question why sell a game they know does not work without a patch that you can only get on the net?? hmm
The game is the same as all the others of similar name except on a new planet with alians....its (when you get it going)...good

i have to say i expected much more from mr meier and alpha centauri, it was almost retro stuff and i think that civ 4 complete knocks spots of this, the gameplay is childish and eratic not that impressed i must say (sorry sid)
update update
given up with this as it seems to have a bug in it , my computer seems to hang after 30 to 40 mins of gameplay don`t know if anyone else has had the same experience
